How do you place the brake cable onto the Brake caliper?

I changed my rear brakes, 96 Ford Taurus GL, and took the brake cable off, but now I can not get it on to the lever. It seems the cable is to short but I took it off so its the same length. What can I do to put the cable back on the lever?
