First Time Buying a Car help plz??!!?
Okay so I am buying my first car pretty soon and I need some advice and guidance (I'm only 17 and a college girl...I have no clue as to what to do under the hood lol I just figured out what %26quot;changing the oil%26quot; means) Any who, I am thinking about buying an older model car like a 97 Chevy Cavalier ( but I'm stl looking in the classifieds) and I just want to know a few things like...
What are some things to look for when buying a car?
What are monthly maintenance things that I am going to have to have done to the car? Where to go? How much will it cost? And what are the best places to go for people with a strict budget? (Maintenance stf like oil change, tune ups tires brakes and ...etc)
FYI- I live 6hrs away from all friends and fam so I have to do it on my own (checking stf out and taking the car to get fixed) also I am paying for everything by myself so I will have a tight budget (no more than 200 a month for maintenance stf)
= ] thanks for your help its greatly needed and greatly appreciatedFirst Time Buying a Car help plz??!!?You are going to want a Honda or Toyota!!! I am a HUGE car enthusiast and can honestly say they are two of the most reliable brands on the road.... especially because im asuming youre gonna buy a car with high mileage on it. The gas is great with 30 mpg easily in a camry, corolla, civic, accord....etc. They are nice and sporty, have high quality engines, and the parts and repair costs are minimal. Insurance will be cheap on a car like this, you cant find a cheaper car to insure.
Ok so you find your car, take it to a mechanic and have him inspect the entire thing... if he clears it buy it. DONT BUY A CAR WITHOUT DRIVING IT OR TAKING IT TO A MECHANIC!!!!! if the seller refuses to have a mechanic look at it, theres usually something wrong with it. change your oil every 3 months and never forget to do that!! flush out coolant system every 18 month, and when your current tires are worn, change. any more questions email me... id love to help you pick a car!First Time Buying a Car help plz??!!?First off you want to buy a Japanese car they prove to be the most reliable I learned this the hard way buying a 1998 Audi A4 I ended up paying over $1000 in repairs in under a year. Secondly mileage is key the lower the mileage the younger the car is regardless of the year because that just means the car was driven less you should aim for a car with probably around 60,000 to 70,000 miles for a used car but the lower the better. Thirdly oil changes are around $40-$50 at the mechanic and you should change the oil about every 3,000 miles as for brakes they last for a pretty long time not sure the miles but it really depends on how hard you brake but the brake pads cost around $120 for the average car however im not sure how much it'll be at the mechanic. And lastly a great place to look for cars is on craigslist.orgFirst Time Buying a Car help plz??!!?At Google, search for %26quot;How to buy a used car%26quot; and you will find tons of advice.
Consumer Reports magazine does an extensive survey of readers and publishes a list of the most reliable used cars. Find it at your public or college library. The used car report is in the April issue. You can access this online for a reasonable charge, $30, I think.

Before you go shopping, make arrangements with a trustworthy garage to check out the car before you buy it. They will know what to check and they'll charge you $50 or so.
Before you finalize the deal, make arrangements for what obligation the buyer will have if something major goes wrong soon. The arrangement might be anything from %26quot;I won't do anything. Caveat emptor.%26quot; Or they might agree to something like drivetrain repairs or who knows what. Just be sure you discuss this BEFORE the deal is finalized, BEFORE any money changes hands.First Time Buying a Car help plz??!!?First off, find a mechanic that is willing to do a check on your potential car. Then stick with it, if you can't have it inspected, then don't get it from that person. If you go to a dealer, you should know that they will push you until you're nauseous. So try to get an auto-trader magazine. Make phone calls and get mileages and vin numbers if something interests you. It's easy enough to get a car's history of owners on-line nowadays. So make sure to do that too. If you see a car repeatedly being sold every couple of years, then chances are it's a HUGE lemon. Don't buy any used cars that were registered in Louisiana or Texas in the last couple of years. They're probably salvage from Katrina.
And last of all, if you do find a car from a personal source, do NOT go alone to check it out. Take a friend, preferably a male. I have a 1994 Volvo wagon I bought for 3500.00 3 years ago with only two previous owners. It is great and gives me about 35 mpg on the highway. I had it narrowed down to that one and a Saab. But the Saab had like 10 different owners. And my Volvo had been leased once and then with one family after that. So, look for safety and economy, not sporty and you'll do great with getting your car!!!First Time Buying a Car help plz??!!?Consider a lightly used Chevrolet Malibu or Cobalt if you can't find a low mileage Cavalier. They are all good cars and are relatively inexpensive to repair if you need to. Lots of dealers and mechanics around that can work on them competently and parts are reasonable. Get a Carfax from the seller if possible, look under the hood for obvious signs of wrecks or repairs, mis matched paint, overspray, bent braces, etc. Take it to a local mechanic to have it put on a lift if at all possible. IF it is a dealer, they often offer a free thirty or ninety day warranty, at least where they will pay for either parts or labor. Ask if it has ever been wrecked or in water, and make sure the title is clear and clean, no rebuilt or water damage titles. Good luck.First Time Buying a Car help plz??!!?You also should compare car insurance quotes for different cars before buying one, for example here - carinsurance.enacre.net

What about this poem?..........true story about me not enough space so go to the next question that continues?
making something like it never happend
would you ever let go of the person that was there all along,
break the bones in the hand that never would have belonged?
at school, she makes fun of you,
but at home, she's the best friend you know you'll never lose.
you back in the days,
find the person who's holding your hand the whole ways.
the friendship's like a chain,
it can't bend or brake,
but it can make your heart shake.
now three months after you move away,
you look at yall's picture back when you haven't even tried but now changed.
you haven't seen her in a month now,
you wonder how?
everytime yall meet up after so long,
you look into her eyes and notice something's wrong.
your so long gone and caught up in your own world,
you start to forget about that beauiful,trust-worthy,hurt girl.
she calls you everyday,
but you let it go to voicemail, because, you have nothing to say.
you cry yourself to sleep,
because you know some how yall will never again meet. What about this poem?..........true story about me not enough space so go to the next question that continues?Nice poem i like it

Repurposing brake pads?
I had the brake pads changed on my car and they gave me the old ones back - I am not sure where to get rid of them.......and I am a crafter and these are so sturdy-ish lookin - I was wondering if anyone has any creative, craftsy type ideas on how to repurpose brake pads? Dont worry about answering if your response is going to be something juvenile like %26quot;make it into a dildo%26quot; or something equally childish - it really is a waste of time and well.....lameRepurposing brake pads? You probably shouldn't as they may have asbestos in them. The backing of the pads is just shaped to the brake caliper and made from steel. It may be best to just throw them away. I do like the dildo idea thoughRepurposing brake pads?I know what you mean. They really are kinda cool, and after they are washed they are safe - no asbestos worries. It is the dust that is dangerous, not the pads.
Just a thought - the friction surface is readily carved to a depth that would let you wipe paint into the scribed areas, while the surrounding area is already smooth. From there, I hope your imagination is better than mine.Repurposing brake pads?I once made stick men out of bolt and nuts, with a big nut as a head, breathing apparatus and mini tank at the back.
These men all rested/stood on old brake pads. Friction bit at the bottom.
I used to have them in different positions etc, they were sprayed mainly matt black and I sold them at camden market for 15 quid each.
I sold thousands so there's a chance someone knows what I am talking about.

Parking lamps problems?
Hello,
I would appreciate any advice about how to fix my problem. I have Ford Focus SE 2000 (no fog lights). A couple of days ago the parking lamps and instrument cluster lighting went out suddenly when I pressed remote luggage compartment release button. Side lights (left, right), brake lamps, back-up lamps, and hazard flasher are working fine. When I press brake pedal, the instrument cluster lights up normally.
First, I changed brake lamps because I thought they burned down. It happened before. Then I checked fuses - they looked fine. Then I replaced headlight switch, but it didn't help. I bought a used one. Maybe I need to get a new switch.
Thank you for your recommendations,
DmitriParking lamps problems?Check grounding in bulb sockets and also ground to frame for light assemblies. It sounds like you have a floating ground, and when you put the brake pedal down, the power %26quot;backfeeds%26quot; through the parking light circuit! Parking lights and dash lights on same circuit! There are a number of wild things that may appear if you have grounds missing (especially on back lights). They range from brakelights going out, when pedal down, and pkg lights coming on, or the other way around, I have even seen park and dash lights come on dim (seen only in dark), - with lights turned off, - because the power from brake lights was making %26quot;backfeed%26quot; through park (since ground missing on brakelights)
Now be advised that what the fuse %26quot;looks like%26quot; is not proof the fuse is good! Try switching with another fuse of same size- these fuses are identified by color! So find one of that color, switch and see if the problem goes away on this circuit, - and shows up on the other one! You may have a spare stored in the cover over fuses, - or somewhere there (don't know exactly what it looks like). Other than that the only definate proof is a continuity check.-- one thing you can do there is to get a %26quot;cheap voltage checker%26quot; (which is a light with clip on wire on one end, and a pointed %26quot;probe%26quot; on the other, - you clip wire end to a good grounded part close enough to allow the probe to reach fusebox--- then try making contact on the little pieces of metal showing on top of fuse, - - if you %26quot;read%26quot; (bulb lights) voltage on one side, you shoud read it on other side, - if not the fuse is burned out. If you don't read on either side, try turning lights on and then checking! Also you can make sure that the accessory that is indicated is turned on (this may make voltage available in that circuit).
By the way are these lights on the trunklid? The trunk opener might %26quot;blown%26quot; ground wire, if it was damaged a little before this problem happened. So it might be a good idea to check and see itf the lid is still grounded to the frame. Also check around wires going to the release mechanism to see if the wire from it is shorted to one of %26quot;light wires%26quot;, - ---or the release wire grounded to frame (which would probably blow a fuse)!Parking lamps problems?Thank you for your answer.
Please advise where I can find ground connections (to the frame) in my car.
Thanks again,
Dmitri

Parking lamps problems?before you go crazy trying to fix it.. call the dealer and speak to the service manager.. ask him if there's any common problems with them and if there are any open recalls on the car.. you may have to give him the vin #... and then move to the next test... check for fuses and grounds..My husband's mustang is turning over but not starting.?
Husband has a 1986 Ford Mustang 5.0 Fox Body.... The past couple of days he's been having a few issues. Sunday he went out and it wouldn't start, the battery was dead... So he spent 3 hours fiddling with it with me telling him %26quot;Check your wiring something is draining your battery%26quot; Needless to say our day plans were shot and after taking it to Advanced auto to get it charged he gave me the neener neener neener face with me shaking my head saying the problem wasn't solved. Fast Forward to today...
He went out today and the car would turn over but not start. A friend of his, myself, and him are standing over the car and He changes out the starter cellulode (spelling) but still not luck as I sigh and suggest once me the wiring. I know my husband and he's the fiddle not read the instruction type. I am the read the instructions type and have read the chilton's manual on his car cover to cover. I think its the spark plug wires since the distrubuter module is fine. The car is getting fuel (we checked after I nagged)... these two yuppies were standing there twisting and tweaking ground wire and wire harnesses like that was going to help *sigh*. I know he has changed out one or two spark plugs recently instead of changing all of them out at ONCE... and did not change the spark plug wires. He has had this car two years and has not changed out the plug wires or all of the spark plugs since having it... nor does he know the last time the spark plug wires were changed out. They look old to me and even the Chilton's manual is hinting to it. Any proffessionals/mechanic types out there with some advice. I already spoke to my Dad who taught me what I know about cars. For a woman I am fairly capable around cars, I know how to change my own oil, brakes, spark plugs, spark plug wires, tires, radiator tubes, radiator... I've even replaced a clutch in a Mazda 626 with my Dad's help.. and helped replace a clutch in my brother's truck along with all sorts of other assorted odds and ends and if I have a Chilton's manual.... I am just getting the %26quot;Me Alpha male grunt grunt%26quot; thing from him. (patrol coming up and he's about to get taken down a peg or two in his pack status around our house LOL) Any help appreciated so I can just do it tommorrow while he's at work and do the %26quot;I told you so%26quot; female smile (sorry guys! What is wrong with my breaks?
i went to a mechanic to change my brake pads.
wagner premium ceramic brake pads.
anyways, all of a sudden i noticed a weird noise.
when i have my foot on the brake at a red light, if i step on it harder, i hear a weird noise, like i dont know how to explain it. but im sure its the brake pad going on the rotor or something...
also, sometimes when im making a turn, and the wheel is completely turned, i hear a knocking or clicking noise.
its a 2002 Mustang, which makes it a rear wheel drive if this helps any to concluding your answer.
thanks. What is wrong with my breaks? It sounds as if one of the new brake pads is loose. Maybe one of the retainer clips has broken. You need to get it back to the mechanic ASAP.What is wrong with my breaks?could be an actual problem with the brake pads themselvesWhat is wrong with my breaks?you did not say if the mechanic repaired the brakes. if he did then go back to himWhat is wrong with my breaks?1 ABS lite on? may be sensor making abs system work
2 caliper sticking..dont ignore it,,a draging caliper can wreck pad and rotor [[cost me 200 because i ignored the rubbing sound]What is wrong with my breaks?ok so im not an expert but me and my father fix up our cars together and i would suggest that you immediately stop driving it or you might break something. it doesnt seem like a coincidence that the mechanic just worked on it. i would take it back to him and let him or another professional know and look into it right away.
wagner premium ceramic brake pads.
anyways, all of a sudden i noticed a weird noise.
when i have my foot on the brake at a red light, if i step on it harder, i hear a weird noise, like i dont know how to explain it. but im sure its the brake pad going on the rotor or something...
also, sometimes when im making a turn, and the wheel is completely turned, i hear a knocking or clicking noise.
its a 2002 Mustang, which makes it a rear wheel drive if this helps any to concluding your answer.
